Introduction

In the context of the work carried out to provide socio-economic databases that reflect the reality of household expenditure, consumption and income, most countries conduct Household Income and Expenditure Surveys, or what used to be called the Family Budget Surveys. Due to the ongoing changes in the expenditure, consumption and income patterns, this survey is conducted periodically and regularly. Most countries tend to conduct it every five years. However, sometimes the nature of the phase, a country is passing through, may require conducting the survey in less than five years due to rapid changes in the population structure resulting from sudden events such as wars, migrations and economic disasters and crises, all of which have an impact on the nature of the expenditure, consumption and income patterns of the population.

Sample size / Targeted entities

Sample size: To achieve a better representation of survey results, a two-phase stratified random sample is used for both citizen households and non- citizen households.

Targeted entities: The citizen household sample is designed to be representative at the main area/sector level as the regions have been divided into main areas/sectors “layers”. An enumeration area sample was drawn from each layer using the proportional sampling method in the first phase and a cluster (consisting of 12 households representing an enumeration area) was drawn from each enumeration area in the second phase.

The non-citizen household sample is designed to be representative at the region level (Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia). An enumeration area sample was drawn from each region using the proportional sampling method in the first phase and a cluster (consisting of 12 households representing an enumeration area) was drawn from each region in the second phase.

As for labour camps, a group of representative labour camps has been selected at Emirate’s level.
